Derby Grammar Junior School boys love Blue Peter. So they put their heads together to come up with ways to win one of the coveted Blue Peter Badges.

As a group they decided to write a poem, story or create a labelled picture about a subject they love.

With the support of Year 5 teacher, Mrs Hamilton, 26 pupils submitted their entry, along with a 50 word letter that explained why they felt they deserved a badge and what it would mean to them.

There’s never a guarantee of a Blue Peter badge, so they were waiting on tenterhooks to find out if they had been successful. So how delighted they all were when, eight weeks later a letter and badge from Blue Peter arrived on their doorstep. They are now being proudly displayed on their shirts or blazers.

Twins Danny and Alex are both aged 10 and in Year 5 at Derby Grammar School. Alex explained that as well as his 50 word letter he chose to write a poem. He said: “My poem was called What lies beneath the ground and it was inspired by recent a visit with my family to the Jurassic coast.”

Danny added: “It was really exciting when we got the letter from Blue Peter and the badge through the post. Alex had opened his first and mum told him not to say anything so it didn’t spoil the surprise for me.”

Mrs Hamilton added: “All of the boys worked on their submissions themselves. Their work was fantastic and a real joy to read.

They all clearly love the programme and it was wonderful to see the excitement on their faces when they brought their badges in to school.”
