History was made on Wednesday 20th June, as Bethany School’s Under 13 girls’ cricket team celebrated an unbeaten first season, competing for the first time in the sport against other schools in the region. The team triumphed against Ashford School and have also beaten Dover College, Buckswood and Gad's Hill in their fixtures.

Girls' cricket was introduced at Bethany School at the start of this term by the Head of Girls' Sport, Sam King. The sport was introduced in response to the growing national popularity of the game, fitting with Bethany’s ethos of offering a 21st-century education.

Sam King, said: “This is a fantastic achievement. To win one match would have been great but to win all four is outstanding. I am so proud of all the girls who have worked so hard; they continue to exceed my expectations every time they play.”

The Under 13s have been supported in their triumph by Sixth Form pupils Georgina Hill and Edward Harby as part of their Sports Leaders award. They have been able to bring their passion and expertise to the game as representative players for Kent County Cricket Club. We are very proud of the way in which the whole School community has supported and encouraged the girls as they learn and develop in this new sport.

Headmaster, Francie Healy, said: “This unbeaten season shows the level of sporting accomplishment and ambition at Bethany. It’s not easy to compete in a new sport against other, more established teams; to do so and to remain unbeaten for an entire season is a very rare achievement indeed. We are all extremely proud of them and I am sure we will see them go from strength to strength in the years to come.”

Sport at Bethany School goes from strength to strength; the girls’ cricket team follows in the footsteps of Bethany’s 1st XV rugby team, who also celebrated an unbeaten season earlier this year.
