Derby Grammar School pupil, James Falleth, made the most of his June half term break by taking part in a Routes into STEM course coordinated by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT).

James, from Nether Heage, is in Year 9. His three-day course took place at Nottingham College, Nottingham University and Rolls-Royce. He learnt about CAD/CAM, 3D printing and metalwork, and saw the latest cutting-edge technology in the University of Nottingham’s workshops. The third day was spent at Rolls-Royce’s Learning and Development Centre where he took part in group activities, had a tour of facilities and saw the engine testing facilities.

On each day he completed a mini project, from creating a metal rose, to designing a comet, developing his circuitry skills by making a phone charger and producing a 3D printed phone holder.

James said: “It was a really interesting three days. It gave me a more in-depth look in to what it is to be an engineer and all different types of engineering. It was also the first time I’d visited a university so it was good to hear about their degrees, and about opportunities at Rolls-Royce such as Higher Apprenticeships.”

Mr Edge is James’ form tutor and also teaches him Chemistry. He added: “James is a very capable scientist and so I had no hesitation in backing his application.

We always encourage and support our pupils to undertake additional activities such as this which not only adds to their skills and learning, but which open up windows of opportunity and possibility.”
