Derby Grammar School’s Year 10 physics students have spent the morning at Rolls-Royce looking at how the organisation uses technology.

After an introduction to the team that would be hosting the visit and finding out a little more about Rolls-Royce, the group looked at the how artificial intelligence (AI) works and the role AI and digitalisation play in the world’s future.

It was followed by a drone coding activity and programming of Lego robots, as well as spending time in the lab and experimenting with some of the ‘toys’ Rolls-Royce uses in its customer demonstrations, including different hardware, software and digital tools.

Jacob McCandless was on the trip. He said: “It was a great trip. I enjoyed talking to the different staff members and getting an insight into what the organisation is like and everything they do”

“We got to see how different technology helps different areas of engineering in ways we never thought of.”

Miss Trubilina is Head of Physics at Derby Grammar School. She said: "I was most excited to organise a session like this, as it is a really valuable opportunity to get an insight into the cutting edge technologies that a leading firm like Rolls-Royce employs. Our pupils felt really inspired by the staff presenting to us, and that alone was worth the trip.

We have many determined young people at Derby Grammar School, some of whom have already chosen their career paths. For those who were still unsure, the day presented a chance to speak to professionals from all different backgrounds - Business and Language graduates who have now taken on Project Management jobs, as well as technically-minded engineers from a highly academic background, and even people who have joined the firm straight from sixth form and who are now completing a sponsored degree through Rolls-Royce.

All of these interactions served well in broadening the horizons for future opportunities. Many of our pupils impressed the staff at Rolls-Royce with their inquisitive nature and mature approach to career discussions."
