Big Me Day crowns Careers Week at Battle Abbey Prep

Battle Abbey Prep School Bexhill pupils held a dress up day with a difference, to come dressed as what they wanted to be when they grow up in support of ActionAid’s Big Me day. The Big Me fundraising day was part of their week-long focus on careers and jobs.

During the week the pupils in Years 5 and 6 were put through introductory sessions on the school’s career mapping programme. A system that will provide support and advice as they move through the Prep and on to the Senior School at the Abbey in Battle in Year 7.

The initial session consisted of a questionnaire designed to prompt pupils into thinking about their futures and suggesting some potential careers, based on their interests and talents.

Other sessions held included discussions on why people work and jobs in general.

James Dennett, Careers Coordinator said: ‘The pupil were very engaged with a surprising amount already holding strong ideas of what it is they want to go on and do. It is interesting at this age to see what the influencing factors are, be it interests and talents, parental preference, social factors or the media as the primary drivers. It will be very interesting to see how these preferences change as the pupil’s progress with their education at the Abbey.’

Maria Maslin, Prep School Headteacher, said: ‘The pace of technology means we are educating pupils for jobs that may not currently exist.  There was a lively discussion with Year 5 about some jobs which no longer exist or are under threat, like that of a milkman and some that are yet to be created. There was a very lively debate about driverless public transport and the jobs that this might necessitate in the future.’
