475th Anniversary inspires pupil to create an app

Berkhamsted School's 475th anniversary inspired Daniel Brener, a current Year 12 student, to develop an app that offers a virtual tour of the School's historic Castle Campus. The Berkhamsted 475 app is now available to download from the app store.

Berkhamsted School's 475th anniversary inspired Daniel Brener, a current Year 12 student, to develop an app that offers a virtual tour of the School's historic Castle Campus. The Berkhamsted 475 app is now available to download from the app store (Apple devices only).

The idea for an iBeacon tour of the School emerged from discussions considering the potential use of the new iBeacon technology in a variety of business and educational environments. “It was soon clear that an iBeacon 'tour' celebrating the 475th anniversary of the school would be the best option to pilot the new technology,” explains Daniel.

The hard work soon began and Daniel worked in cooperation with a partner company, Locly (Bookry Ltd), who developed an Apple App for the tour. He also built a network of 20 iBeacon devices across Castle Campus to deliver the content at each unique location.

The virtual tour of Castle Campus covers locations including the Lych Gate, Old Hall and the Archive, Deans' Hall, the Library, the Music School, the Chadwick Centre, Newcroft, the site of the former Fish Public House, and Bees and Swifts houserooms. “The app focuses on a collation of comparative photographs to convey the great history of the school,” says Daniel.

“The School is grateful to the efforts of both Daniel, who was the technical development lead for the project, and the School's Archivist, Lesley Koulouris, who sourced photographs and wrote the content for the tour from information in the Archive,” says Vice Principal Mr Michael Bond.
