4th Form pupil Joe Connelly's victory at National Pentathlon Finals in Bedford sees him through to International Championships in Glasgow.
4th Form pupil at Austin Friars in Carlisle, Joe Connelly, had a fantastic day with the Cumbrian team at the English Schools’ National Pentathlon Championships in Bedford recently where he became Champion.
Joe won the 1st event, the hurdles, in 11.04 seconds. He then achieved new Personal Bests in the Shot Putt and Long Jump with throws and jumps of 13.82m and 6.20m respectively. Clearing the High Jump at 1.76m put Joe in 2nd place at the end of the 4th event, meaning he needed to finish at least 12 seconds ahead of the 1st placed athlete in the 800m to take overall victory. Pacing himself until the last bend, Joe duly did this, flying past many tiring athletes to cross the line in 2.16.18 minutes.
Joe finished in 1st place with 3260 points to 2nd place’s 2965 and will go on to represent England at the International Championships in December.
Corbin Hamilton from 10 also competed at the event, finishing in 17th place with a Personal Best in the hurdles of 11.79 seconds
