Battle Abbey Prep School Bexhill finished in a fantastic fifth place at the recent ESSA Swim finals in Sheffield.

The swim squad started their route to the finals in March when they won the County round of the ESSA Swim Championships in Horsham.

Following the County round, the Regional event took place at the Guildford Spectrum. Both the Medley Relay and the Freestyle Relay teams swam well with Medley Relay coming 7th and the Freestyle Relay coming in 3rd place.

Based on their strong showing at Guildford, Battle Abbey Prep School’s Freestyle Relay team secured their place at the ESSA National Swim Finals at the prestigious Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

The team arrived at Ponds Forge nervous but determined. The freestyle relay heat was exciting and the children swam hard to secure themselves a place in the ‘A’ Final. The start of the final began with loud music, flashing lights and the school name on the screen, there was much anticipation. Amazing swims followed and saw Battle Abbey achieving a new Personal Best and finishing in 5th place overall.

Miss Govan, Prep School Swim coach said, ‘On the day, the swimmers didn’t disappoint, all of them swam their hearts out and enjoyed the general spectacle of the event. Just to make it to Sheffield was a massive achievement but to make it into the top Five nationally is amazing.

Battle Abbey were the only team not to be made up of all competitive club swimmers, with many of the other schools being able to train almost double the amount compared to our swimmers. We couldn’t be prouder of them!'
