Battle Abbey School leads the way

Pupils from Battle Abbey School commemorate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

Battle Abbey Prep School was the place to be for the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings; the momentous conflict which defined the course of English history.

Following a steady build-up this term with every child in Key Stage 2 learning about the events of 1066 and the Norman Conquest, having a History Day with the visiting ‘Living History Workshops’ group, an informative Year 6 assembly on the Battle of Hastings and each KS2 child designing and making their own battle shield… Friday 14th October 2016 was finally upon us!

Prep pupils and staff alike, arrived at the Abbey dressed in authentic tunics, balaclavas and garments, in colours taken from the Bayeux Tapestry, ready to join in with the commemorative programme of events. Our children were soon enjoying a full programme of activities provided by English Heritage and, joined by pupils from other local schools, the whole place was alive with Norman and Saxon life.

The highlight was the Grand Parade through the streets of Battle. With pennants and shields at the ready, the children eagerly waited for the gates to be opened to reveal crowds of people lining the street.  Hundreds of children, led proudly by Battle Abbey School, marched the length of the High Street – with band and re-enactors adding a wonderful dose of authenticity to the proceedings.

What a way to celebrate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings!
