Derby Grammar School is celebrating after its pupils won a raft of prizes at this year's Derby Arts Festival.

The 2018 competition was the School’s fifth year of entering, and we had a bumper year of entrants. 27 pupils competed in seven classes, from Set Verse Speaking to Acting, and Junior School and Barbershop Choirs both competed in the vocal section.

Rohan Singh won his class - Solo Acting, not Shakespeare (13 and 14 years). Up against a very competitive field of 23 he performed an extract from’ An Accidental Death of an Anarchist’ by Dario Fo and received amazing feedback from the adjudicator for his performance.

Year 5 pupil, Omer Khan, won the Amanda Jayne Cup for Verse Speaking (10 years) out of a field of 34. The adjudicator was impressed with the clarity of his speech and the moods he managed to create with his voice.

Benedict Rowley (Year 4) and Dhruv Malhi (Year 5) scooped joint third in the Verse Speaking (9 years) class.

Within the singing classes, the Derby Grammar School Barbershop Choir won the Secondary Schools Choir class. Junior School Choir sang ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and ‘Mad World’ in the Voices Intermediate (11 years and under) class. Although not in the final placings, their performance was outstanding.

Mrs Simpson said: “Performing is really nerve-wracking, especially at a young age, but everyone did so well! Derby Arts Festival is something very close to my heart as I spent many of my childhood years competing in the same competition.

The adjudicator said on more than one occasion to our pupils that ‘you are all winners’, and I couldn’t agree more. I am proud of each and every pupil that took part in this year’s festival.”

Mrs Simpson’s Junior School pupils are now looking forward to showcasing their talents in the upcoming Junior School Music and Drama Showcase on 24 May.
