Moreton First were very lucky to welcome a local celebrity to school on Wednesday 19th October. Martin Wood, the Shrewsbury Town Crier is a familiar face known by all locally for his vibrant apparel, loud distinctive voice and large ringing bell. He kindly journeyed to Moreton First to teach the students a great deal about the local history and culture surrounding his incredibly unique job title. 

The children learnt all about what a Town Crier's responsibilities include both today and throughout history. He took us on a journey back to medieval times, where Town Criers played a crucial role in ensuring the swift and effective running of the town. One of these responsibilities include being a human clock, ringing his bell to let townspeople know the time. This time would differ from town to town, as Oswestry and Shrewsbury had an 11 minute time difference! Though some aspects of his job differ from medieval times, he is still a huge asset to the community. He spoke of how no two days are ever the same and how lucky he is to get to travel the world extensively to incredible places such as Bermuda and New Zealand. 

At an impressive 7ft 2, Martin is the tallest Town Crier in the world. Not only does this height win him acclaim at international Town Crier championships, but it also landed him a Hollywood role. Martin is a body double to a very well loved magical giant. This link to the character of Hagrid and the Harry Potter film franchise was a snippet of information that was much appreciated by the pupils of Moreton First, who went on to tell Martin that Hagrid was indeed their favourite character. 

It was a great opportunity for the Moreton First pupils to meet Martin and hear him talk. He also visited an art class where the children got the chance to draw him in his bright livery!
