Students celebrated at Bedales School on Thursday with the highest percentage of A* grades since the top grade was introduced six years ago with 22% of grades at A*.
Bedales, established by John Badley in 1893 as one of the first co-educational boarding schools in the UK, also saw its students notch up the school’s highest ever percentage of A*-B grades at 77%.
Headmaster Keith Budge said: “I am delighted that our students’ hard work has been recognised with these impressive results which will enable them to access some of the most demanding universities and art schools in the UK and overseas. Our departing sixth formers leave with a healthy appetite for learning and enquiry, well equipped for the rigours of further academic study – they have also enjoyed our broad and stimulating curriculum which encourages students to follow their interests and passions.”
Chloe Zhao and Angel Fang achieved four A*s each in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Art respectively. Chloe will progress to the University of Warwick to read Maths and Angel will read Architecture at the University of Bath. Head Girl, Becky Grubb from Petersfield, achieved three A*s in English Literature, Religious Studies and Art and a grade A in Latin. Robyn Whittaker achieved two A*s in French and Spanish, a D1 (equivalent to A*) in Mandarin Pre-U and an A in Latin to study Ancient Languages at University College London.
Among those celebrating were Bella Anderson who achieved two A*s in English Literature and French and an A grade in History to read Arabic at Wadham College, Oxford, and Max Hannam, with one A* in Biology and two As in Physics and Chemistry and will read Biochemistry at Worcester College, Oxford.
Students bound for international institutions include Robbie Ward (Psychology A*, Art B, English Literature B) and Katy Scott (English Literature A, Classical Civilisation B, Religious Studies A), who will both take up their places at New York University to study Liberal Arts, and Ashley Viljoen (Biology A*, Chemistry A, Maths A) who will also study Liberal Arts at University of British Columbia. Josie Parker achieved A grades in History and Spanish and a grade B in Maths and takes up a Liberal Arts place at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Winner of the Cecily Eastwood Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Bedales community, Sam Headon, will take up a place at the prestigious ESMOD in Paris to study Fashion (Classical Civilisation B, Design B, English Literature C).
Continuing the school’s tradition of developing promising young actors, a Bedalian sixth former trained with the National Youth Theatre this summer, a leading arts organisation that invests in training performers and theatre technicians. Hebe Bartlett, who attended the Acting Senior Course, achieved one A* (Drama) and two Bs (English Literature, Dance) to gain entry to the prominent East 15 Acting School. Seven Bedalians will take up places on Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (FdAD) courses following strong A Level results in Art at Bedales.
