Luckley Celebrates 100 Years!

Luckley House School in Wokingham celebrates its 100th birthday this year with a host of activities and events to commemorate this fantastic achievement and look forward to the future.

When the students and staff arrived for the start of term at Luckley House School in Wokingham, they were part of an historic Centenary cohort marking 100 years of the School in Wokingham.

The original Luckley School was opened in 1918 by Miss Bertha Drake and Miss Ivy Barratt, firstly in Southland Road, Wokingham and then moved to its present-day Luckley Road site in November that year. The School became Luckley-Oakfield in 1959 when it amalgamated with Oakfield, Arnside in the Lake District, with 55 girls moving south to join 35 Luckleyans in 1959. A lot has happened since then, most notably a name change to Luckley House School in 2013 and the first boys to put on the School uniform in 2015. With 100 years of educational excellence under its belt, Luckley House School is excited to mark its birthday with several events planned from September 2018 to July 2019.

These will bring together all past and present students, families and staff, to celebrate the School’s firm foundations and look forward to its continued success.

These include:

• Centenary Service of Thanksgiving, Wednesday 31 October

• Musical Firework Extravaganza, Friday 9 November

• Christmas Market, Thursday 29 November - a free ticketed event with festive stalls, food and entertainment

• The Big Party, Saturday 29 June 2019 - a ticketed event with fun for all the family, including food, entertainment and an outdoor cinema • Speech Day, Wednesday 10 July 2019 – bringing the Centenary year to a conclusion.

Jane Tudor, Head, said: “In addition to our big events there will also be a number of projects in School to mark our Centenary. The grounds have been flooded with 100 specially commissioned, ironwork bluebells and we are inviting all the School community and visitors to make their mark by adding a leaf to our Family Tree installation. Two wonderful ways to plant our milestone for the future.” She concluded: “Members of the Luckley community; past, present and future, are equipped and ready to take on the challenges of life in our society. We are committed to being a force for good. This is as true today as it was the day Miss Bertha Drake decided to open our wonderful school, 100 years ago.”
