Recently, pupils from Stover School, Newton Abbot, took part in the 2017 Salters' Festival of Chemistry at Bristol University.

Anna Perkins, Anna Stone, Owen Sutton and late substitution Paul Griffin met Head of Science, Dr Allway at Newton Abbot train station and the group travelled to Bristol University Chemistry Department.  Here they worked as a team in the University Chemistry laboratories to solve two chemical problems using practical skills.  In the Salter challenge they had to use forensic science and their code-breaking skills to solve a murder and in the University challenge, they had to prepare a mixture that would change colour at a specified time.  The university put on a flash bang show (which did flash and bang!) looking at physical and chemical changes at the end of the lab work which was enjoyed by all.  They then travelled back to Newton Abbot for a well-earned rest.

Salters’ Festivals are a series of one-day fun events held at universities throughout the UK and Ireland. They begin in mid-March and run through to the end of June. The festivals provide the opportunity for enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university department and to take part in practical chemistry activities which are fun! Prizes are awarded to the winning teams and all students receive participation certificates and fun prizes. During the last 16 years over 44,000 students have experienced the fun of practical chemistry through the Salters’ Festivals and sponsorship in support of the Festivals has been raised from over fifty companies.

Dr Allway commented that the group were a pleasure to take to the festival.  They worked well as a team, organising their work effectively and making the most of the experience.  During the long journey, their behaviour was flawless and they were considerate to the other travellers around them despite the early start and long day. Well done to all!
