Schools join together to ‘Love Languages’

19 schools from across the region came together recently to celebrate languages at the City of London Freemen’s School‘s annual ‘Love Languages’ Competition.

Students performed short plays, songs or poems in French, German or Spanish for the competition, with an array of colourful costumes and inventive props. The Ashtead School’s competition is now in its seventh year and this year the theme was ‘Family and Friends’.

The winners in the Years 5 and 6 competition were Kingswood House with their perfomance of Un jeu de mots while Newland House won the Years 7 and 8 competition with Un match amical.

“The idea for the competition is entirely our own and we are very proud to have come up with this novel and engaging way of celebrating languages,” said Sarah Hankin, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at City of London Freemen’s School, who set up the competition. “We want young learners to realise that languages are not only an essential part of the curriculum but also that they can be fun and creative at the same time.”

Other schools involved in the competition included Ashford Prep School, Avenue Primary, Chinthurst School, Epsom Primary School, Guildford High School for Girls, The Hawthorns, Parkgate House School, Pennthorpe School, Raleigh School, Shrewsbury House School, St David's School, St Andrews School, Manor House School, Nonsuch High School, Notre Dame School, Tolworth Girls School and City of London Freemen’s school itself.
